
The fifth congress of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union concluded on Saturday evening at the Moktar Ould Daddah Convention Centre in Nouakchott, with the Professional Empowerment slate winning the elections for the Union Council and Executive Board.
The winning slate received 444 votes, compared with 15 for the Salvation slate.
The results led to the election of Mr Ahmed Salem Ould Sidi Abdallah as the new President of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union. In his first statement after the results were announced, he pledged to be the President of every Mauritanian journalist and media professional, affirming his determination to serve journalists and defend their professional interests.
The President-elect praised the election supervisory committee’s efforts to ensure the transparency and integrity of the electoral process and welcomed the spirit of democratic competition that characterised the congress.
For his part, the representative of the Salvation slate, Sidi Ould Obeid, congratulated the President-elect and the members of the winning slate, announcing his acceptance of the voting results in a spirit of democracy and professional responsibility.
Former President Mr Ahmed Taleb Ould Maâloum also congratulated the new leadership and wished it success in leading the Union during the coming period.
The election supervisory committee was chaired by former minister Mr Abidine Ould El Kheir, under the supervision of bailiff Mr Mohamed Bouya Ould Mohamed El Amine, in the presence of representatives of both competing slates and several journalists and professionals.
