Journalists’ Union President: “We are proud to have brought our services closer; our achievements call for a new experience”

The President of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union, Ahmed Taleb Ould Maâloum, expressed pride in bringing the Union’s services closer to members by opening branches in the country’s different regions. This sought to make the media’s voice heard, bring union action closer to everyone, and ensure that all members engage with developments in the media landscape.

Speaking on Friday at the opening of the Union’s fifth congress, the outgoing President added that what has been achieved still requires a new experience, greater readiness and higher ambitions along a path of cumulative development.

Ould Maâloum added that this milestone reflects Union members’ intellectual maturity, their belief in the principle of alternation in leadership, and the practical recognition of differing opinions and viewpoints.

He explained that they do not claim to have achieved the impossible or that the Union presents a perfect picture. Motivated by their commitment and sense of responsibility, they sought to add another building block to this union institution, paving the way for those who share their concern for strengthening its institutional foundations.

The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union opened its fifth congress on Friday under the theme “For a free, responsible press committed to values”, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesperson, El Houssein Ould Medou, the President of the High Authority for the Press and Audiovisual Media, Mohamed Abdallah Lahbib, and the Union’s congress delegates.
