Journalists’ Union President pledges neutrality and reaffirms commitment to a transparent congress in mid-May

The President of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union, Ahmed Taleb Ould Maâloum, pledged that the Union’s leadership would remain equally distant from all candidates in the elections scheduled for mid-May, affirming its commitment to ensuring transparency and equal opportunities.

At a press conference on Monday evening, he explained that a committee comprising senior figures in the profession and individuals recognised for their integrity had been formed. It would receive candidate slates from today until the 30th of this month.

He said that the Executive Board would work to organise the congress under transparent conditions that allow all candidates to present their programmes, strengthening the journalistic community’s confidence in the electoral process.

Ould Maâloum called on women and men journalists to act responsibly and prioritise collegiality and professionalism during this period, in the interests of the profession and its unity.

He also discussed achievements during the outgoing term, citing the opening of offices in every region, fulfilment of the Union’s principal demand for permanent appointments for contractual public media employees, and support and care for the widows and children of deceased journalists.

The Union’s Executive Board had scheduled the fifth ordinary congress for 15, 16 and 17 May, when its governing bodies are expected to be renewed.
