Mauritanian Journalists’ Union welcomes the President of the Republic’s grant to assist families of deceased media professionals

The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union welcomed the generous grant by President of the Republic Mr Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, allocating 10 million old ouguiyas to support the families of deceased journalists.

In a statement received by the Mauritanian News Agency, the Union expressed its great satisfaction with this grant, the second of its kind, which confirms the President’s commitment to solidarity with the families of deceased colleagues.

It said that the President’s grant is a generous humanitarian gesture, reflecting his caring, paternal concern for the media community and his strong resolve to support all aspects of the media sector.

The Union explained that the announcement of the grant by the Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesperson, Mr El Houssein Ould Medou, at the fourth “Helping Hands” event organised by the Union on the night of the twenty-seventh day of Ramadan was met with joy and enthusiasm by those present. The gathering included official figures, opinion leaders, intellectuals and dozens of journalists from the country.

It added that the deceased journalists’ orphans and widows receiving the grant welcomed the announcement with great happiness, expressed in prayers for the President of the Republic’s continued health and well-being, which they conveyed to the Union teams responsible for delivering the assistance.

The Union also welcomed the positive atmosphere that has recently prevailed in the press sector, leading to fundamental reforms expected to have a positive impact on media development and on improving conditions for those working in the sector.

It reaffirmed the importance of the “Helping Hands” campaign, which the Union regularly organises during the blessed month of Ramadan, and its efforts to develop it. The campaign embodies loyalty to and remembrance of colleagues who devoted tremendous efforts to serving journalism over many years.

The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union expressed its sincere thanks to all journalists who took part in the fourth edition of “Helping Hands” and in previous editions, honouring collegial ties, commitments and family bonds. It also thanked figures from various backgrounds who supported this effort, made their contribution and provided valuable assistance.
