The regional conference for Arab countries on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists opened yesterday, Wednesday morning, in the Tunisian capital. Organised by UNESCO, the International Federation of Journalists, the Tunisian Journalists’ Union and several journalism-sector partners, it runs from 2 to 4 November 2022.
The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union participated with a substantial delegation led by President Ahmed Taleb Maâloum, together with Deputy Secretary-General Achrif El Arbi and Imam Eddine Ahmedou, responsible for Disputes and Complaints.
During the conference, President Ahmed Taleb Maâloum outlined the state of press freedoms in Mauritania. He recalled that the country had topped the Arab ranking for years, adding that its recent slight decline might be linked to economic and social conditions.
He also recalled the case of Ishaq Ould El Mokhtar, who has been missing in Syria for several years.
He called on journalism organisations and international human rights bodies to stand with the Union on their colleague Ishaq’s disappearance and to raise his case on similar occasions.
Alongside the conference, the Union President held several meetings with heads of journalism and United Nations bodies, diplomats accredited in Tunisia, organisations interested in journalism, and Tunisian and international media figures.
