The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union and the Al Jazeera Centre for Public Liberties and Human Rights held a gathering in Nouakchott on Thursday evening, 16 June 2022, to condemn the assassination of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

Dozens of Mauritanian journalists and representatives of several journalism and human rights organisations attended the gathering.
The Israeli army shot and killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on the morning of 11 May, while she was covering a military raid in the Jenin camp in the West Bank.
Israeli army snipers prevented medics from approaching to save Abu Akleh, who was bleeding and died shortly after being shot.
