Mauritanian Journalists’ Union organises a seminar on press freedom and human rights

As part of its efforts to train and support professional journalists, and to reaffirm its strong commitment to keeping Mauritania at the forefront of the Arab and international landscape in media freedom and human rights, the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union is preparing a seminar in cooperation with the Al Jazeera Centre for Public Liberties and Human Rights and in partnership with the United Nations Centre for Human Rights Training and Documentation. It will discuss the importance of respecting press freedom, protecting journalists and ensuring their safety during field reporting, from 12 to 16 June 2022.

The activity will provide training for professional journalists in our country, giving participants a forum for guidance and the exchange of views and expertise with the seminar’s guests, including journalists and international experts in human rights and public liberties.

The activity is expected to bring together dozens of media professionals, human rights advocates and experts from different countries. It will offer an important opportunity to learn about our country first-hand, its advanced progress in freedom of expression and liberalisation of the audiovisual sector, and the goals and results achieved in human rights.

It is also an occasion to call on official authorities and media stakeholders to contribute actively to the activity’s success and make the necessary efforts for the country to regain the leading position it deservedly held in the rankings of international organisations concerned with media freedom and human rights. It also offers an opportunity to enrich the seminar and training workshops and show a fitting image of our national media and human rights landscape.
