Mauritanian Journalists’ Union
Statement
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
We at the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union learned with deep sorrow of the crime committed by the Zionist entity’s occupation soldiers in assassinating professional journalist and Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh. She was wearing her press vest in an open area while covering the treacherous soldiers’ incursion into the “Jenin camp”. The Zionists have once again demonstrated the brutality of their treatment of journalists and their attempt to silence the truth.
The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union offers sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the deceased’s family, to the journalistic community worldwide generally and the Al Jazeera network particularly, to the heroic Palestinian people in their struggle, and to all free people around the world. We denounce and condemn in the strongest terms this cowardly Israeli crime, carried out in cold blood by the occupation army to coerce and terrorise journalists into abandoning their role in conveying the truth and exposing attempts to erase evidence of its crimes. In this regard, we affirm our solidarity with and support for the pioneering Al Jazeera channel.
We at the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union call on the international community, particularly the United Nations, human rights bodies and journalism organisations worldwide, to make the necessary efforts to bring the perpetrators before international justice to answer for their wrongdoing and aggression. We also affirm our commitment to rejecting the terrorising and killing of journalists. The passing of our colleague Shireen Abu Akleh and the cold-blooded spilling of her blood extinguish the spirit of every free professional journalist committed to revealing the truth with courage and professionalism. This will not deter journalists from their role in conveying the truth, exposing dirty and despicable practices, and helping uphold human conscience, values and ethical principles.
