Statement
Following our appeal to the competent authorities to facilitate journalists’ work during the curfew imposed as a precaution against the coronavirus pandemic, the authorities responded positively. The arrangements have been referred to the supervising ministry to receive applications from journalists assigned to field reporting, press organisations and international correspondents. Applications will then be referred to the security authorities to issue movement permits to journalists working during curfew hours. On behalf of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union, we welcome this swift response to our appeal, which demonstrates the highest authorities’ awareness of the national press’s role and the importance of helping it carry out its duties.
We also call on all Mauritanian journalists to join campaigns informing the public and raising awareness of the pandemic’s dangers, and to advocate implementing all precautionary measures required during this exceptional period.
