Journalists’ Union branch announced in Hodh Ech Chargui

Minutes of the general assembly establishing the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union branch in Hodh Ech Chargui.

In view of the particular stage reached by press reform in our country, supported by a sincere political commitment demonstrated through the appointment of a sector reform commission and the invitation of the Union President to activities marking the 60th anniversary of national independence; and in view of journalists’ enthusiasm across generations to restore confidence, provide suitable conditions for improving their performance and effective participation in the country’s development, and prepare a code of honour setting out the proper approach for an exemplary journalist, a group of journalists working in the region’s public and private sectors decided to form a Union branch to contribute actively to this promising direction. This general assembly was prepared after several weeks of consultation among colleagues from various media organisations and discussion of the most effective ways to organise local press in Hodh Ech Chargui, including proper professional standards, access to news sources, stronger teamwork and other matters that could strengthen friendship among journalists and produce media output appropriate to this stage.
