Journalists’ Union President reaffirms confidence in HAPA and calls on it to shoulder its responsibilities

Journalists’ Union President Mohamed Salem Ould Dah called on the High Authority for the Press and Audiovisual Media (HAPA) to shoulder its responsibilities in its census of private media organisations, affirming the Union’s confidence “in the HAPA leadership’s programme at the present stage”.

Ould Dah was speaking when the Union Bureau received a HAPA delegation yesterday, Thursday, as part of the census of press organisations and bodies that HAPA had announced a few weeks earlier to assess the sector’s situation.

According to a Union press briefing, Ould Dah stressed that organisations lacking even the most basic requirements could not be compared with others that genuinely exist and comply with the laws and regulatory texts.

He also criticised “the erosion of standards in the sector over several years”, asking commission members to take responsibility and report the facts faithfully, without bias or favouritism. He called for “settling the representation of Mauritanian journalists and protecting the sector from the dilution that has harmed the country’s reputation and standing”.

The delegation, led by Authority Council member Maa El Aïnine Ould M’Beyrick, toured the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union headquarters to learn about its work and the equipment and facilities available to it.
