Mauritanian Journalists’ Union President welcomes the creation of a press reform commission

The President of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union, Mr Mohamed Salem Ould Dah, welcomed President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani’s decision to establish a national media reform commission, noting that it responded to journalists’ long-standing demands.

At a press conference held this Wednesday at the Union headquarters in Nouakchott, he added that the commission marked an important turning point in Mauritania’s media history: for the first time, public authorities were launching genuine press reform implemented by media professionals themselves.

He noted that the commission’s announcement crowned a series of positive steps taken by the President of the Republic for the press, as part of a strategy to rely on it in recognition of its pivotal role. This began with a meeting with the Union’s Executive Bureau, continued with a gathering of different generations of journalists, followed by the first congratulations received by journalists on their World Day, and is now completed by the establishment of a sector reform commission.

The Union President called on all Mauritanian journalists to support the commission, which reflects a serious political commitment to organising and professionalising the press sector.
