Al Jazeera abruptly dismissed Baba Ould Boubacar, known as M’Beyrick, a member of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union holding employee number M133, who had worked as a cameraman in its Nouakchott bureau since 2011. The dismissal followed a letter he sent to the network’s management on 30 April through the Nouakchott bureau director, asking it to respect Mauritanian law and regularise his legal status. Yesterday, Jad Chehayeb, the network’s Head of Human Resources for the Middle East and Africa, informed him that his services were being terminated. The Nouakchott bureau director immediately told him that this was management’s response to his letter requesting respect for Mauritanian law and regularisation of his status.
