After the police summoned colleague Sidi Ould Obeid, publishing director of the Essabq news website, following a Chinguitel complaint over allegations published without evidence—for which he subsequently apologised on his website—the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union intervened with the company on his behalf. This intervention led the company to agree to withdraw the complaint, for which we thank it.
On this occasion, we renew our call to journalists and all Union members to ensure accuracy, objectivity and professionalism and to substantiate everything they publish with sources. Just as the Union is committed to solidarity and supporting its members, it is also committed to others’ rights and to professionalising the press sector.
