Journalists’ Union President calls for a volunteer campaign against the coronavirus pandemic

An old medical saying handed down through nations states: “A dirham of prevention is better than a quintal of treatment

Fellow citizens,

We must all stand together as the coronavirus pandemic spreads. We must all take the necessary precautions and implement the safety measures issued by the competent and authorised health authorities.

This is a responsibility for all of us, beginning with the immediate family and extending to every part of our society and institutions.

The current situation requires broad solidarity between society and the state to protect our people and reduce the risk of infection, with Allah’s permission, by respecting and implementing all health guidance.

The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union calls on all professional and civil organisations and all media institutions to take responsibility for mobilising and informing citizens about implementing safety measures and staying in their homes.

We also call on them to take part in volunteer cleaning and disinfection campaigns.

We call on users of social networks—Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.... etc.—to exercise caution and care when sharing information, check its sources, avoid rumours that cause public panic and focus on disseminating preventive measures.

We also call for respect for our security and military institutions as they fulfil their duties, and for refraining from disparaging them.
