Mauritanian Journalists’ Union President: media professionals arrested, most recently Ahmedou Ould El Wediaa

Media and political figure Ahmedou Ould El Wediaa was arrested last night as part of a campaign of detentions targeting several personalities in recent days.

The Mauritanian government has not explained the reasons for his arrest or the charges against him.

 Ould El Wediaa’s arrest came a week after the detention of journalist Moussa Seydou Kamara, who remains in custody. Journalists’ Union President Mohamed Salem Ould Dah quoted Seydou Kamara as saying that he did not know why he had been arrested, even after several days in detention at the Mauritanian Security Directorate.

The Tewassoul party today condemned the arrest of media and political figure Ahmedou Ould El Wediaa in the campaign targeting several personalities in recent days.
