Mauritanian Journalists’ Union holds a seminar on the media’s role in strengthening national unity

The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union held an open dialogue seminar yesterday, Sunday, at its Nouakchott headquarters entitled “The media and their role in strengthening national unity”.

In his address, Union President Mr Mohamed Salem Ould Dah said that national unity expresses every form of social, political and economic harmony within a country. He explained that one sign of a united people is all citizens being subject to law, justice and equality, without discrimination or favouritism.

He noted that social diversity in any state is a source of richness, explaining that the Constitution provides for integrity and equality between citizens and accountability for anyone who harms national unity through words or actions, ensuring strong national cohesion.

The Union President called on Mauritanians to reject absolutely any statements that harm national unity, spread hatred or advocate division between citizens, regardless of their source.

The seminar, which included contributions and discussions, was attended by journalists and others interested in the media sector.
