The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union held a discussion to examine different generations of journalists’ visions for sector reform.
Several veteran and young journalists participated in the roundtable.
Union President Mohamed Salem Ould Dah said the press reform consultation days organised in 2016 had produced important recommendations, but the government had not acted to implement them in practice.
During the roundtable held on Thursday night into Friday, Ould Dah added that the recommendations had remained shelved despite the consultations being organised with the government, which had pledged to implement them.
Mauritanian journalists representing different generations offered ideas on how to reform the sector.
Participants discussed the need for reform and attributed part of the media sector’s dilution to both the state and practitioners. Some called for serious action leading to press reform and restoring the standing of those working in it.
The Union pledged to organise similar discussions in future to exchange ideas on ways to advance Mauritania’s press sector.
