
US Embassy media adviser Ms Kweira Bertiz met the President of the Mauritanian Journalists’ Union, Mr Mohamed Salem Ould Dah, at his office in Nouakchott. They reviewed cooperation between the Union and the embassy in media and ways to improve it. The adviser welcomed the competition and democratic atmosphere surrounding the renewal of the Executive Bureau, which reflected freedoms and the maturity of Mauritanian journalism. She affirmed the embassy’s readiness to support the activities and direction of this organisation, the most representative of Mauritanian journalists. A first cooperation step was announced: ethics training for 23 journalists, to be organised by the embassy with the Union on the third day of the coming August in Nouakchott. The Union President praised the general level of public freedoms in the country, which had preserved its advanced standing in the Arab world, and the government’s neutrality in the latest Union elections. He affirmed the Union’s readiness for joint training cooperation and anything serving Mauritanian journalists’ highest interests. Colleague Mohamed Ould Evva from the embassy’s media section and Executive Secretary for Training Mr Lebatt Ould Emdeih attended the meeting.
