The Mauritanian Journalists’ Union called on the authorities to reveal the circumstances of journalist Dr Mohamed Ould Cheikh’s detention by Mauritanian security services for several days.
In a statement, the Union called for his detention location to be identified “out of respect for the law”, for “his relatives to be allowed to visit and check his health, and for him to be granted his legal right enabling his lawyer to follow developments in his detention”.
The Executive Bureau’s statement reiterated the Union’s absolute rejection of harassing journalists “for expressing their opinions and political and intellectual views”.
Last Wednesday, the Political Security Directorate summoned Qatar-based media professor Mohamed Ould Cheikh after he arrived in Nouakchott to submit his nomination for the coming parliamentary elections for the Nestatiou youth group. The charges against him have not yet been disclosed.
